NONNA’S HOUSE
I come from a family with strong maternal figures: Nonna is one of them. Her parents were migrants from Italy after the First World War – they travelled by boat, third class, with a 2-month-old baby. Researching my family history, I came across the original documents of their ship’s log and my great grandmother’s naturalisation papers. Nonna lives in a Victorian terrace in Fitzroy, given to her by her mother. I cannot think of Nonna without thinking of her house. It is part of her, part of my family, part of me. Like Nonna, it is strong, familiar and steadfast.
Nonna = Italian for grandmother
